A pair of Wesmen in the middle are this week's Garbonzo's Players of the Week for U of W athletics.
Men's volleyball middle blocker Ethan Duncan and women's volleyball middle blocker Jessica Friesen were named the top Wesmen athletes for the week for their performances Friday and Saturday nights in Kelowna, B.C.
Ethan Duncan, men's volleyball: The second-year product of Westwood Collegiate hit .555 for the weekend and, in a straight-sets win on Saturday, notched six aces, the second highest total in a match this season in the Canada West. The six aces were also a career high.
Duncan had just one attack error all weekend, knocking down 12 kills on 18 swings in a three-set win Friday night, when he also added two stuff blocks, five block assists and two aces for 18.5 points.
On Saturday, he scored another four kills on nine swings to go along with four digs, a stuff block, two block assists and 12 points.
Jessica Friesen, women's volleyball: A second-year middle from Lord Selkirk Regional, Friesen had the most impactful performance of her Wesmen career Friday night and followed it up with another offensively effective effort on Saturday.
In a loss Friday, Friesen matched her season-high for kills with seven and did it on 10 kills with no errors, a .700 percentage that stood as the second highest of her career, and highest for a match in which she had more than seven swings.
She also had five digs, a stuff block and a block assist for 8.5 points.
On Saturday, a four-set loss, Friesen set career highs with four aces and 13 points. She had another seven kills, plus three digs and two stuff blocks.
The Wesmen volleyball teams will have their home finales this weekend hosting Alberta on Friday and Saturday night, which will be Senior Night.
