The Winnipeg Wesmen will get to open their season on their home floor the Canada West conference announced Thursday in unveiling its 2018-19 conference basketball schedules.

The season will get underway across western Canada Oct. 25-27 and the Wesmen men and women will open their seasons at the Duckworth Centre Oct. 26 and 27 against the Victoria Vikes.

The basketball teams are the only U of W teams that open their seasons at home in 2018-19.

The Wesmen will embark on a 20-game slate with five home games in the first semester and five more in the second semester. The Wesmen will be on the road for seven games in the first semester.

Winnipeg takes one of its longest road trips of the season in Week 2 when the Wesmen head to Prince George, B.C., to take on the UNBC Timberwolves for a pair of games. That sets up another road trip the following weekend when the Wesmen fly out to Edmonton to play the MacEwan Griffins.

The Wesmen will host each of their former Great Plains Athletic Conference foes at least once this season, with Regina visiting Jan. 25-26, Brandon in town Dec. 1 and Manitoba on tap Jan. 31.

The teams close out their conference schedule with matinees against the Bisons Feb. 2.

Also of note, the Wesmen teams will play five straight home games between Jan. 11-31.

The bye weeks will fall on the weekend of Jan. 18-19.

The Wesmen will not play Alberta, Calgary, Fraser Valley, Mount Royal, UBC or UBC-Okanagan in the conference season.

Canada West playoffs are slated to start Feb. 8-9 with nationals pegged for March 7-10. Halifax is once again hosting the men's tournament while Toronto will play host to the women's bracket.

All games will be available via webcast on canadawest.tv.
