Wesmen Soccer will stay in the confines of Friendly Manitoba for the final four games of the 2019 Canada West conference season, it was revealed Thursday.
The Canada West conference unveiled its 2019 soccer schedule and the UWinnipeg women's team will play three of its final four games on its home pitch at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. The Wesmen host the Manitoba Bisons Oct. 10, the Lethbridge Pronghorns Oct. 18 and the Mount Royal Cougars Oct. 19, the season finale. The fourth game in that stretch will be a road contest at IG Field on the campus of the University of Manitoba.
In addition to getting the favourable scheduling to finish the most crucial part of the season at home, the Wesmen were also allotted four of their first six games of the season at home.
Winnipeg will open the conference season Sept. 6-7 against Regina and Saskatchewan, respectively. The Wesmen will then hit the road for their lone west-coast road trip of the season for Sept. 13 and 14 games at Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.
The Wesmen also have the luxury of playing three non-playoff teams from a year ago on their home pitch: Sept. 20-21 against UBC-Okanagan and Thompson Rivers, and Oct. 18 against Lethbridge.
The annual Duckworth Challenge game will be the Oct. 10 match at the Waverley Street complex that serves as the home for Wesmen Soccer.
The Wesmen also unveiled a busy non-conference schedule that includes two NCAA opponents. The Wesmen will travel to Superior, Wisc., for an Aug. 19 match against the NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets. The following day the Wesmen will move on to play the NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. Winnipeg will then compete in the Regina tournament Aug. 22-24.
