THUNDER BAY, Ont. — The Winnipeg Wesmen held the Lakehead Thunderwolves to under 30 per cent shooting, but still saw their season-opening win streak snapped Saturday night.
The Thunderwolves shot just 28.2 per cent from the field, but nevertheless prevailed with a 67-64 decision that ended Winnipeg's seven-game win streak to start the non-conference season.
Faith Hezekiah led four Wesmen players in double figures with 15 points. Lena Wenke and Anna Kernaghan added 13 apiece and Mikayla Funk chipped in a career-high 10 to go along with seven rebounds. Wenke was 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from three.
Winnipeg shot 5-for-18 from three and 36.5 per cent from the field.
Nikki Ylagan had 15 points but did it on 4-for-21 shooting, including 4-for-19 from three, to lead the Thunderwolves.
Kielly McDonough added 12 points for the Thunderwolves.
The Wesmen wrap the tournament up against the Memorial Seahawks Sunday morning.
