Wesmen Impressive In 4-0 Shutout Win Over Cougars

Three first half goals in the opening 20 minutes lifted the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Jamila Calvez, Maeghan Lindsay and Inga Christianson all found the back of the net early on to give the home team a quick 3-0 lead. Shae-Lynn Dodds scored late in the second half to close out the scoring.

First year Wesmen goalkeeper Madison Fordyce made seven saves to pick up her first career U SPORTS shutout.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 1-3-1, the Cougars with the loss drops to 2-2-1 in the Canada West Women's Soccer conference standings.

"Really impressed with our attitude today. Players were focused and determined. We want to keep working hardand always learn from each game. Players were aware of the urgency of picking up points and we stepped up today. Super proud of the team and our program", said Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson.

Calvez, the Wesmen team captain opened the scoring in the 3rd minute taking a pass from Tyler Johnson and beating Cougars goalkeeper Cailyn Leeson with a perfect shot to the upper right corner.

Maeghan Lindsay made it 2-0 in the 8th minute off a feed from Alexis Dolinski beating Leeson with a perfectly placed shot for her team leading third goal of the season.

The Wesmen offensive explosion was not done yet. Fourth year midfielder Inga Christianson took a feed from Shae-Lynn Dodds in the slot to make it 3-0, 19 minutes into the contest.

Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a 3-0 lead.

At the start of the second half Mount Royal made a change in net replacing Leeson with second year goalkeeper Miah Godek.

Dodds closed out the scoring in the 85th minute picking up a rebound off a Gelsomina Vanderhooft shot to make the score 4-0.

Stats: Winnipeg had the advantage in total shots by a 13-9 margin. Fordyce made seven saves for the Wesmen while Leeson/Godek combined to make four saves.

Upcoming: Both teams will be in action on Sunday afternoon. Winnipeg will host the Alberta Pandas while the Cougars will take on the Manitoba Bisons.
