Emma Parker crushed a career-high 23 kills to highlight a narrow five-set loss Friday that opened the Winnipeg Wesmen women's volleyball non-conference season.
Parker, the second-year left side out of St. Norbert Collegiate, added seven digs in her big 2018-19 debut, but the Wesmen dropped a 3-2 (25-13, 25-27, 17-25, 26-24, 20-18) decision to the host Regina Cougars at the season-opening seven-team tournament in Regina.
The Wesmen followed that with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18) defeat at the hands of the Saskatchewan Huskies in a match in which head coach Diane Scott gave plenty of playing time to her young guns.
In the second match of the day, the Wesmen freshmen had a chance to step up, with first-year Bella Gierys notching nine kills and a block, and fellow rookie Kelysian Warmington recording six kills and a block. Ashleigh Laube, a second-year left side, led the way with 10 kills and three aces.
The Wesmen are back in play Saturday with a pair of matches against Brandon (1 p.m. CT) and Alberta (7 p.m.) before closing out the tournament Sunday against Manitoba.
