Auggie Okose let his talent do the talking on the recruiting trail.
Â
Okose, a versatile 6-foot-5 middle from Glenlawn Collegiate and Winman Volleyball, is the latest commitment in the Class of 2025 for Chris Voth's Winnipeg Wesmen men's program.
Â
He will study Kinesiology and have five years of eligibility.Â
Â
Okose admitted he wasn't aggressively pursuing opportunities for post-secondary play, but had known since early in high school he wanted to play at the next level.
Â
So Okose leaned on his tremendous athletic ability to catch the eyes of would-be recruiters, and it wasn't long before they took notice. Â
Â
"In Grade 10 I started to improve a lot and I was getting a bunch of looks from some smaller schools," he said, "and so I just decided to put my focus on that."Â
Â
Okose said his high school coach, Russ Harder, was a support and provided an assist in navigating the recruiting process.Â
Â
Okose was ranked as the No. 5 talent in the province in this season's Winnipeg Free Press coaches poll, and he was No. 4 in 2023. He has been a member of the Manitoba provincial team, was named to the all-Manitoba team as a graduating all-star, was a club all-star in 2023, and was a tournament all-star in helping Glenlawn capture the 2022 provincial JV championship.
Â
"Auggie's athleticism is simply unparalleled," Voth said. "His abilities were on full display during his high school season, showcasing a powerful and aggressive offence, exceptional blocking technique, and versatility with his back-row presence. Auggie's relentless work ethic and determination will not only strengthen our team on the court but will also elevate our team culture as we move forward."
Â
At the start of this year's high school season, Okose was connected to Voth at the U of W's pre-season high school tournament. With a desire to stay close to home after high school, Okose was quickly open to the potential of joining the Wesmen.Â
Â
"I just talked to him a bit there and I was interested in joining the team and he was excited to meet with me and it just went from there," Okose said.Â
Â
"It wasn't really a tough decision. It was my best option."
Â
Okose played his 15 and 16U seasons with Winman, ventured over to 204 for his 17U and is back with Winman for his final club season this spring.Â
Â
He has largely played in the middle but did have a stint at left side with 204 last year.Â
Â
"I would say I bring a positive energy on the court and want to help as much as I can. If I'm given a role, I try to be my best towards that role," he said.Â
