Winnipeg Junior Wesmen

Junior Wesmen offers youth basketball programming for female athletes in Manitoba. Our goal is to offer high-quality, developmentally appropriate basketball training in a fun and competitive environment. We offer girls club programming, as well as a variety of other development opportunities such as camps and seasonal training groups. Our training is aligned with Sport Canada's model for Long-Term Development in Sport & Physical Activity. Junior Wesmen basketball provides athletes with opportunities to develop fundamental basketball skills, enhance their mental performance, and learn valuable life skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork. All programming is overseen by the University of Winnipeg Wesmen coaching staff and facilitated with help from our Wesmen student-athletes.

2026-27 Jr. Wesmen Club Programming
Our program for 2026-27 is designed to provide a more periodized training year. The fall will place a strong emphasis on developing complete basketball players through individual skill work, strength and conditioning, and decision-making in competitive situations. While we will continue to compete, there will be less emphasis on team concepts and more on transferable basketball skills. The winter will be an off time for school season with optional weekly court time and continued strength training for maintenance. The spring will be a competitive season for our 15U and 17U PEBL teams. Additional training and competition opportunities will continue to be provided for our athletes who are not age-eligible for PEBL.

FALL: Jr. Wesmen Season
  • 2009-2010 Girls and 2011-2012 Girls Teams
  • 2x per week on-court, 2-3x per week strength and conditioning, weekly open gyms and shooting homework, Peg City tournaments

WINTER: School Season
  • Scaling back club programming
  • 1-2x per week strength and conditioning (maintenance), weekly open gyms

SPRING: PEBL Season
  • 15U Girls and 17U Girls Teams
  • Tryouts will take place in December for our 15U and 17U PEBL program
  • PEBL teams will train 2-3x per week and compete in up to 4 tournaments

This model is intended to optimize player development and avoid burnout & injury that can result from over-training. By reducing the emphasis on competition in the fall, we hope to create space for our athletes to grow their individual game, build strength, and be at their best for their school basketball seasons. This approach also positions players to compete at a high level during the spring PEBL season or through selection to the provincial team, both of which provide valuable high performance competition and exposure opportunities.
