The Winnipeg Wesmen are once again going to Shoot for the Cure.
The Wesmen women's basketball team will participate in the nationwide U Sports Shoot for the Cure campaign, which raises money for breast cancer research and initiatives.Â
The team will participate in a January shoot-a-thon in which all Wesmen players will shoot 100 free throws on their own and accept donations from the community for each free throw made.
You can lend your support in a variety of ways.Â
- Attend our Shoot for the Cure game on Saturday, Jan. 28 against the Fraser Valley Cascades.
- Sponsor a Wesmen basketball student-athlete and make a donation of your choice per made free throw.Â
- Donate a set amount by going to the Shoot for the Cure website. Click the "Donate" button, then select "Donate to a Team" and search for "Winnipeg Wesmen".
Additionally, the Wesmen are inviting all Winnipeg schools to participate along with us with a chance to bring your team to the Jan. 28 game for free.
How can your school participate?
Â
Print off a sponsor sheet then ask friends and family to sponsor you. If they agree, fill out the sponsor’s name, contact information, and pledge amount. After the shoot-a-thon, you can contact them to collect their donation.
Any school that raises $500 as a team will gainÂ
free admission to the Wesmen-Fraser Valley game on Jan. 28. Don’t forget to wear pink!Â
Contact head coach Alyssa Cox by email atÂ
al.cox@uwinnipeg.ca if you are participating so that we can make the arrangements for your team’s admission to the game.
Your donations should be made before the attending the game.
How does a free throw shoot-a-thon work?
Â
Participants will shoot 100 free throws and record the number of made shots. Sponsors will pledge a monetary amount to donateÂ
per made free throw. For example: An athlete makes 83 out of 100 shots and has a sponsor for $1.50. This sponsor then donates $1.50 x 83 made free throws for aÂ
$124.50 donation.
Â
Sponsors can also choose to donate a set amount, rather than a per-make donation.
