Nigel Nielsen had his best weekend in a Wesmen uniform and has been named the Birchwood Auto Group Wesmen male athlete of the week.
Nielsen, a fourth-year left side with the Wesmen men's volleyball team, was also named the Canada West conference men's volleyball player of the week after leading Winnipeg to two victories on opening weekend.
Nielsen put up back-to-back 20-plus kill performances in Edmonton as the Wesmen swept the MacEwan Griffins and opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2018. 
Friday night, Nielsen hit .311 with a career-high 23 kills on 45 swings in a four-set victory. He also added five digs and an ace. 
He followed that up Saturday with 20 kills on 40 swings on .300 hitting as the Wesmen swept the match in three straight. 
The weekend also represented Nielsen's first career matches with at least 20 kills.
