Spartans Spoil Wesmen Home Opener With Last Second Win

Jessie Brown's three pointer at the buzzer gave the visiting Trinity Western University Spartans a dramatic 74-73 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Brown connected on nine-three pointers and was the top scorer on this night, finishing with 31 points.

The second year guard tied the game at 71-71 draining a three pointer with 22 seconds remaining in the final quarter. Winnipeg's Skylar Boulanger made a running hook shot to put the Wesmen ahead 73-71 with 0.96 showing on the clock. After a timeout Brown took the inbound pass and nailed the game winning shot at the buzzer.

Trinity Western had things going their way early on as the built a 19-17 lead after the opening quarter. The Spartans found some breathing room in the second quarter thanks to a 9-0 run in the first 2:50 to extend their lead to 28-17. Winnipeg was outscored 22-12 in the second quarter and went into the halftime break trailing 41-29.

Winnipeg who struggled from the field in the opening half shooting 36%, found their offense in the third quarter. Three pointers by first year guard Lena Wenke and fourth year guard Megan Noonan cut the lead to single digits (53-45) with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. Winnipeg went on to outscore the Spartans 22-17 to trail 58-51 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Winnipeg drew even. Renetha Burton's jumper with 6:00 minutes left tied the score at 63-63. After the score was tied at 66-66, baskets by Taylor Thorkelsson and a three pointer by Wenke gave Winnipeg a 71-66 lead with 1:37 left. The Spartans answered back with a two-pointer by Kayla Gordon followed by a three by Brown to tie the score at 71-71 setting up the dramatic finale.

Aside from Brown, Kayla Gordon scored 15 for the Spartans. Natalie Carkner was next with 11, while adding seven assists. Tessa Ratzlaff pulled down a game high 13 rebounds.

First year guard Lena Wenke led the Wesmen with 26 points and four steals. Skylar Boulanger added 14 while Renetha Burton and Megan Noonan each scored 10. Taylor Thorkelsson led Winnipeg in rebounding with nine. Kerri Kuzbyt had seven assists.

The Spartans (2-3) and the Wesmen (1-4) will wrap up their two game series Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
