Wesmen Down Calgary 72-51 To Open Regular Season

Box Score

It was a great way to start the regular season. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up regular season play with a convincing 72-51 victory over the Calgary Dinos Friday night in Calgary.

Match Statistics

Fourth year guard Megan Noonan led the Wesmen with a game high 27 points, including going six-of-eight from three point territory. Skylar Boulanger added 14 points and six rebounds.

Calgary was led by Kristie Sheils with 13 points. Vanessa Wesolowski, with 11 points and Emma Nieuwenhuizen, with seven points.

The first half saw both teams get off to slow offensive starts with baskets not falling for either team and defensive breakdowns. However, the Wesmen were able to edge the Dinos with more efficient scoring and took advantage of clumsy plays by the Dinos.

At the end of the half, the Dinos trailed the Wesmen 32-21 and this continued to be the story as the game wore on. Dinos' turnovers were costing them play after play and the Wesmen were often able to capitalize with ease. At the end of the game, the Wesmen scored 28 points off of 27 Dinos turnovers. Despite a few inspired plays and attempts to claw back into the game, the Wesmen dominated the Dinos for a 72-51 win.

Winnipeg and Calgary will face each other tomorrow night in Calgary to wrap up the regular season opening series. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time). The game can be seen live on canadawest.tv
