Box Score The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Basketball team started strong but struggled in the second half as the Calgary Dinos defeated the Wesmen 69-47 Saturday evening on the road in Calgary.
Both teams complete the first weekend of regular season play with 1-1 records after Winnipeg recorded a 72-51 victory Friday night.
Brianna Ghali led Calgary with a game high 17 points. Kristie Sheils and Kelsey Lund each scored 14. Clair Colbourne had a double-double 12 points and 21 rebounds.
Megan Noonan and Skylar Boulanger led Winnipeg with 11 points each. Lena Wenke added 10. Taylor Thorkelsson led the team in rebounds with seven.
After Calgary jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, Winnipeg responded with a run of their own and trailed only 12-10 going into the second period.
The Wesmen kept control in the second, outscoring the Dinos 19-9 and headed into the halftime break with a 29-21 lead.
But things changed in the third when Dinos guard Brianna Ghali checked into the game. Ghali exploded for 15 in the second half leading Calgary in the second half comeback. Her layup at the 4:16 mark would tie the game at 35-35 and after Kelsey Lund scored soon after, the Dinos wouldn't trail again, outscoring the visiting team 22-8 in the frame.
Calgary kept control in the fourth quarter, winning the period 26-10 for the 22-point win.
"Although we are disappointed with the result from tonight, overall we are pleased with our first weekend of the regular season. To gain a split on the road against an extremely veteran and physically tough Calgary team was impressive. We need to learn how to maintain our intensity over a two game series", added Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
Winnipeg will be back on the road next weekend travelling to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas on Friday and Saturday.
