Wesmen Beat Bobcats, Winning Streak Hits Five

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen remain unbeaten in 2016. Winnipeg extended their unbeaten streak to five with a solid 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 26-24) victory over the Brandon University Bobcats Thursday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 12-5. Brandon with the defeat falls to 5-12.

Brendan Thielmann and David Bommersbach supplied the power for the Wesmen, each finishing with match highs 14 kills. Taylor Howe and Brendan Black each had eight kills. Logan Brennan led the team in digs with nine. Setter Josh McKay had 39 assists and six digs.

Roy Ching led the Bobcats with 11 kills. Bruce Akubukaka was next with nine. Brady Nault led Brandon in digs with eight.

Winnipeg came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set. The Wesmen committed only three hitting errors and finished with a hitting percentage of .565 as they won the opening set by a 25-18 margin.

The Wesmen continued to roll in the second set, jumping out to a 16-10 lead at the technical break. Brandon managed to fight there way back into the set and tied the score at 18-18. After the teams exchanged points to 20-20, Winnipeg closed out the set scoring five unanswered points to win the set 25-20.

In the third set Brandon had the lead at the technical break by a 16-15 margin. The teams battled all the way to 24-24 late in the set when Winnipeg put the final points away. Kills by Brendan Black and David Bommersbach gave Winnipeg a 26-24 set three win to close out the match.

The teams will continue their series in Brandon on Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.
