Box Score The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up play in 2016 with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-17, 25-14, 25-14) victory over the MacEwan University Griffins Friday evening on the road in Edmonton, Alberta.
Winnipeg with the win improves their record to 8-5, which puts them in a fourth place tie with Trinity Western and UBC. MacEwan falls to 1-12.
The Griffins charged out of the gates with an explosive 27-25 first set win. The Wesmen came alive in set two winning 25-17 and closed out the match in dominating fashion winning sets three and four by identical 25-14 scores.
Third-year outside hitter David Bommersbach led Winnipeg with 14 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks. Taylor Howe had 10 kills and five blocks. Fifth year middle Brendan Black was in on eight blocks. Setter Josh McKay had 33 assists, three service aces and 10 defensive digs.
Fourth-year Griffins outside hitter Ryan McDonald had 14 kills, two aces, six digs, and one block. Third-year outside hitter Shane Kerrison added nine kills, six digs, and three blocks .
