Wesmen Down Griffins In Four, Complete Weekend Sweep

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the MacEwan University Griffins by posting a 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18) victory Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg,

Winnipeg (2-0) posted a straight sets victory against the Griffins (0-2) in the series opener on Friday night.

Fifth year outside hitter Brendan Thielmann led the Wesmen attack with a team high 20 kills, six kills and a hitting percentage of .692. Fourth year outside hitter Taylor Howe added 13 kills and three blocks. First year outside Ethan Duncan finished with 11 kills and added three blocks.

The Griffins were led by fourth year outside hitter Shane Kerrison's 20 kills. Kai Hesthammer finished with nine kills.

Winnipeg's precise hitting came front and centre in the opening set. The Wesmen committed only three attacking errors and finished the first set with a hitting percentage of .500. The duo of Thielmann and Howe finished with 11 kills in the set as Winnipeg took the set 25-18.

The Griifins put on a hitting display in the second set. MacEwan committed a paltry one attacking error and finished with a hitting percentage of .464. Kerrison carried the offensive load in the set compiling six kills. The Griffins evened the match winning the set 25-17.

MacEwan carried their momentum into the third set, jumping out to a 9-6 lead early on. Winnipeg came back in a big way, scoring six of the next eight points to take a 12-11 lead. The Wesmen went into the technical break leading 16-14 and were in total control outscoring the Griffins 9-4 down the stretch to win the third set 25-18.

The fourth set started out on an even foot with the teams exchanging points to 10-10. After the technical timeout, Winnipeg went on a 5-1 run to take control of the set and closed out the match winning the set 25-18.

Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds. MacEwan will play their home opener against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
