Box Score The University of Winnipeg Wesmen fought hard and came out on top in a thrilling 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10) victory over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday evening in Calgary, Alberta.
David Bommersbach led the Wesmen (4-1) with a match high 21 kills to go along with 13 digs and three service aces. Taylor Howe had 16 kills followed by Brendan Thielmann with 14. Garrett Jones also had a double-digit kill night with 10. Setter Mikael Clegg finished with 59 assists and nine blocks.
Alex Bader led Calgary (0-3) with 16 kills. Curtis Stockton added 15 kills and 12 digs.
From the first serve, the match was high in tempo and emotion, as both teams demonstrated a superior skill level. Despite efforts, the Dinos lost momentum and trailed for the last minutes of the first set, resulting in Winnipeg taking the first set 25-16.
The second set was tight throughout, as the point advantage was minimal, but ultimately the Dinos managed to force through (25-22), with stellar kills by both Sean Martin and Alex Bader.
In the third set, the Dinos showed some hesitancy, on which the Wesmen capitalized, winning the set 25-19.
Throughout the forth, the two teams continued to answer each other's points, and it was a gritty battle between two teams looking for a win. Calgary forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win.
Winnipeg trailed early in the fifth set but regrouped to close out the match with a 15-10 fifth set win.
The two teams will close out the weekend series on Sunday afternoon. Start time is 3:30 p.m. Winnipeg Time.
