Box Score The University of Alberta Golden Bears opened up their weekend series against the University of Winnipe Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-21) victory Friday evenin in Edmonton, Alberta.
Ryan Nickifor led the Golden Bears with a match high 13 kills. Kevin Proudfoot led Alberta in digs with 10. Taylor Arnett finished with six blocks.
Taylor Howe led the Wesmen in kills with six. Logan Brennan finished with five digs while Garrett Jones led the team in blocks with three.
Alberta ran away from the Wesmen in the opening set, racing out to a 16-3 lead before eventually winning the set by a 25-11 marin.
Winnipeg stayed even with the Golden Bears to start the second set. The teams were tied 4-4 early on untiil Alberta gained control. The Golden Bears went on a 8-0 run to open up a 12-4 lead. Alberta took a 2-0 lead in the match winning the set by a score of 25-15.
In the third set Winnipeg took a 13-8 lead nearing the technical timeout. Another run by the Golden Bears, this time a 5-0 spurt tied the score at 13-13. A kill by Brendan Thielmann soon after gave the Wesmen a 16-15 lead at the break. After the technical break Alberta outscored the Wesmen 10-5 to close out the third set 25-21.
Alberta with the win improves their record to 5-2. Winnipeg with the loss sits at 4-3.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series Saturday night.
