Box Score The University of Alberta Pandas defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (28-26, 25-13, 25-15) in the weekend series opener Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.
Alberta with the win remains unbeaten with a record of 7-0. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 0-7.
Meg Casault led the Pandas with 15 kills. Eren Orysiuk contributed 13 defensive digs.
Alex Rose led the Wesmen in kills with seven. Madison Fyvie had 10 digs while Jessica Friesen finished with three blocks.
In a thrilling first set Alberta took a slim 16-14 lead into the technical timeout. The Pandas continued to carry the lead late at 23-20 when Winnipeg made a move. A kill by Karissa Kuhr followed by a Alberta attackin error closed the Alberta lead to 23-22 forcing the home team to take a time out. Winnipeg had set point on a cross court kill by Alex Rose but Alberta fought off the Wesmen momentum as both teams exchanged points to 26-26. A kill by Casault followed by a Winnipeg attacking error ave the Pandas the first set 28-26.
The second set was a different story. Alberta raced out to a 16-6 lead and went on to win the set 25-13. The Pandas had a hitting percentage of .464 committin only two errors in the set.
The Pandas precise hitting was evident in the third set as they committed only three hitting errors and had a percentae of .414 as they closed out the match winning the third set 25-15.
Winnipeg and Alberta will wrap up their weekend series in the early game on Saturday night.
