Box Score Nine and counting…The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Basketball team improved their record to 9-0 with a 67-54 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons Thursday night across town at the University Of Manitoba.
Faith Hezekiah led the Wesmen with 17 points. Lena Wenke followed with 15.
Nicole Konieczny led Manitoba (1-8) with a game high 20 points. Emma Thompson was next with 11.
Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead in the opening quarter, highlighted by three-pointers by Kerri Kuzbyt and Wenke. The Wesmen continued to carry the play, taking a 23-13 lead after one quarter.
The Bisons outscored the Wesmen 15-11 in the second frame to cut the Winnipeg lead to 34-28 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter Manitoba stayed within striking distance trailing 38-30. A long three-pointer by Wenke pushed the Wesmen lead to double digits at 41-30. Winnipeg went into the final frame with a comfortable 50-38 lead.
Winnipeg outscored their cross town rivals 17-16 in the fourth quarter to close out the 67-54 victory.
The two teams will wrap up their first half schedules in a rematch Saturday night in the basketball portion of the 26th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Game time at the Dr. David F. Anderson is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
