Box Score The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 29-27, 21-25, 15-13) in a thrilling match Saturday evening in Calgary, Alberta.
Winnipeg who won the series opener on Friday in five sets, fall to 14-8 in the Canada West standings. The Cougars with the win reach .500 with a record of 11-11.
Tyler Schmidt led the Cougars with a match high 17 kills. Lucas King added 14 kills. Jordan Parkin had 14 kills and 12 digs. Jonathan Phillips led the Cougars in digs with 13.
David Bommersbach led the Wesmen with 16 kills. Brendan Black added 15 kills. Taylor Howe finished with 14 kills as well. Brendan Thielmann had 13 kills and 11 digs.
It was a classic battle as neither team was able to win a set by more than four points.
Mount Royal gained the early advantage winning the opening set 25-22 before Winnipeg evened the match winning the second set by an identical score of 25-22.
In an eventful and pivotal third set that went into extra points, The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 29-27 win. Winnipeg did not give up and forced a fifth set by winning set number four 25-21.
The Cougars closed out the match winning the fifth set 15-13.
Winnipeg will close out their regular season schedule next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre hosting the Alberta Golden Bears.
