Box Score The No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears remained undefeated after posting a come from behind 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 15-12) over the No. 5 ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in Winnipeg.
Alberta, now 23-0 fell behind 0-2 to a determined and fired up Wesmen (14-9) team before mounting the comeback.
Ryley Barnes led the Golden Bears with a match high 20 kills. Ryan Nikifor was next with 17. John Goranson and Taylor Arnett each added 11 kills.
David Bommersbach led the Wesmen with 15 kills while Taylor Howe added 13. Brendan Black contributed nine kills and seven blocks.
Winnipeg gained the early momentum in the opening set leading 16-15 at the technical break. The Wesmen found some breathing room later on at 21-17 and closed out the opening set by a score of 25-22.
Nothing seperated the two teams in the second set. Both teams exchanged points and gave the other team no breathing room as Alberta went into the technical timeout leading 16-15. The teams battled to 24-24 until the Wesmen scored the next two points to take the second 26-24 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Alberta found their game in the third set racing out to a 16-8 lead before getting back into the match with a 25-16 win to close the gap to 2-1 in the match.
Winnipeg did not fold in the fourth set. The Wesmen looking to close out the match led 16-14 at the technical break. After the teams battled to 19-19, the Golden Bears scored three straight points to take a 22-19 lead before closing out the set by a score of 25-20 to tie the match and force a fifth set.
Alberta completed the comeback winning the fifth set by a close 15-12 score to keep their unbeaten record in tact.
The two teams will battle on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to close out their respective regular season schedules.
