The University of Manitoba Bisons defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 82-74 in overtime Saturday night in a classic battle at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

The teams were deadlocked at 70-70 after regulation time. Manitoba had control of the overtime period outscoring Winnipeg 12-4

Manitoba with the victory improves to 13-5 in the tight Canada West Men's Basketball standings. Winnipeg with the loss falls back to 9-7.

Keith Omoerah led the Bisons with a game high 22 points and 16 rebounds. AJ Basi and Justus Alleyn each scored 15. Jonathan Alexander had 13. Wyatt Anders finished the contest with 10 rebounds.

Jamar Farley led the Wesmen with 17 points, including four-three pointers. Jelane Pryce finished with 16. Denzel Lynch-Blair added 15 while Ryan Oirbans had 10.

Winnipeg paced by three-three pointers in the opening quarter held the early advantage leading 21-17 after the opening quarter.

Strong defensive play was evident by the Wesmen in the opening moments of the second quarter. Winnipeg opened up the quarter on an 11-0 run and did not allow the Bisons to score their first point of the quarter until there was 4:35 remaining. Manitoba cut into the Wesmen lead on a four-point play by Basi to trail 32-25. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 39-32.

Manitoba cut into the Wesmen lead in the opening moments of the third quarter, reeling off six straight points on their way to outscoring Winnipeg 20-18 to trail 57-52 after 30 minutes.

The teams exchanged points in the final quarter and did not settle anything with the score tied at 70-70 after regulation time.

Winnipeg will be home next Friday and Saturday against Lethbridge while Manitoba will wrap up their regular season schedule against Trinity Western.



Denzel Soliven (Men's Basketball) and Taylor Thorkelsson (Women's Basketball) receive their Jim Schrofel Memorial Scholarships at half time of the Women's game vs Manitoba. Presenting the awards are Suzanne Schrofel (Jim's Mother) and John and Robert (Jim's Brothers). The awards will be presented every year in honour of Jim's memory to a male and female basketball player.
