Wesmen Begin Second Half Schedule With Impressive Victory

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up their second half schedule with a solid 3-1 (25-12, 24-26, 25-14, 25-16) victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday evening in Winnipeg.

The win by the Wesmen snaps a seven match conference losing streak and improves their record to 5-8. UBC Okanagan with the loss falls to 4-9 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Brendan Thielmann and Taylor Howe led the Wesmen with 10 kills each. Garrett Jones finished with eight while Casey Schouten, making his home debut aftermissing the first half with an injury finished with six kills and six service aces. Setter Mikael Clegg had 36 assists and six defensive digs. Ethan Duncan led the team in blocks with five.

The Heat were led by Lars Bornemann's match high 14 kills. Kyle Hinchey added 10 kills. Alex Swiatlowski led the Heat with four blocks.

Winnipeg came out firing in the opening set. The Wesmen committed no attacking errors on their way to a hitting percentage of .667. The Wesmen won the first set in easy fashion by a score of 25-12.

In the second set, Winnipeg held the early advantage jumping out to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. After the timeout Lars Bornemann had three kills to pace the Heat to a 25-24 lead. An Ethan Freund kill on the next play closed out the set in UBCO's advantage by a 26-24 margin to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set Winnipeg's pin point hitting came back. A kill by Casey Schouten gave the Wesmen a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg continued to carry the play and extended their lead to 22-14 late eventually closing out the set thanks to three consecutive errors by the Heat. Winnipeg took the pivotal third set 25-14. The Wesmen finished the set with a hitting percentage of .611 with only two attacking errors.

Winnipeg continued their strong play in the fourth set leading 16-10 at the technical break and were able to fend off the Heat's challenge to close out the match with a 25-16 fourth set win.

The Wesmen and Heat will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night in the early match. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
