The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two game sweep over the UBC Okanagan Heat posting a straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) victory Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg (6-8) opened the weekend series with a four set victory over the Heat (4-10) Friday night.

Taylor Howe led the Wesmen attack with 10 kills. Casey Schouten finished with nine kills and Brendan Thielmann added six. Setter Mikael Clegg had 29 assists and three blocks. Logan Brennan led the team in digs with seven.

Leading the Heat in kills was Kyle Hinchey's match high 14 kills. Lars Bornemann finished with nine. Adam Schwarz finished with 28 assists while Eli Risso led the team in digs with 10.

Taylor Howe got the Wesmen off to a solid start pounding home four kills to give Winnipeg an early 6-4 lead. The Wesmen continued to hold off the Heat and went into the technical timeout with a 16-13 lead. Brendan Thielmann came thru with a pair of kills down the stretch to give the Wesmen the opening set by a score of 25-18.

In the second set Winnipeg raced out to a quick 4-1 lead and extended their lead to 16-11 at the technical break. UBCO made a brief run soon after scoring four of five points to cut the Wesmen lead to 18-15. Winnipeg recovered and went on a 7-2 run to close out the set by a 25-17 margin.

Winnipeg dominated play in set number three. The Wesmen raced out to a commanding 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg extended their lead to 20-11 when the Heat made a run scoring four straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 20-15. Winnipeg found their game again and went on to win the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend taking on the Regina Cougars. The Heat return home to face the Trinity Western University Spartans.
