REGINA, Sask. – The trio of Casey Schouten, Brendan Thielmann, and David Bommersbach led the Winnipeg Wesmen to a straight-sets win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Candaa West men's volleyball match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Schouten finished with 14 kills and a team-high .417 hitting percentage for Winnipeg, while Thielmann collected 11 kills and Bommersbach had nine. The three combined for 34 of the Wesmen's 43 kills as Winnipeg improves to 7-8 on the season.

Winnipeg hit an impressive .400 as a team in the first set, which the visitors won by a 25-18 margin to take an early lead in the match. The second set featured a total of 14 tie scores and five lead changes, but the Wesmen went on a late 5-1 run to win it. They evaded a double set point at 24-22, then responded to Regina's third set point at 25-24 with back-to-back kills by Thielmann. Schouten then finished it off with a kill of his own, giving Winnipeg a 27-25 win.

Winnipeg controlled the third set after a quick 5-0 run in the early going, leading the rest of the way and clinching the match with a 25-20 victory.

Mikael Clegg finished with 35 assists and tied Schouten for the team lead with seven digs while controlling a Winnipeg offence that hit .257 in the win. It's a critical win for the Wesmen in the Canada West standings, as they move up into a tie for eighth place with Calgary as both teams continue to search for one of the conference's seven postseason spots.

Cody Caldwell had seven kills for Regina (0-15) and led all players with a .455 hitting percentage. Matthew Aubrey and P.J. Seekings both had 10 kills for the Cougars, with Aubrey adding a match-leading nine digs to fall just short of a double-double. Michael Corrigan finished with 29 assists.

The teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday night after the conclusion of the women's match. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the CKHS.
