Wesmen End Regular Season With Split Against Cougars

The Mount Royal University Cougars came back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in five sets (17-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-9) in a key Canada West Men's Volleyball Conference match up Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

The Cougars with the win salvage a weekend split avenging Winnipeg's three set victory Friday night.
Both teams complete regular season with identical records of 13-12, complicating the final two playoff spot positions in the conference.

Fourth year outside hitter Riley Friesen led the Cougars with a match high 28 kills. Friesen committed only four attacking errors and finished the match with a hitting percentage of .533. Tyler Schmidt was next with 15 kills. Jonathan Phillips led the team with 11 digs.

Winnipeg was led by Brendan Thielmann, David Bommersbach and Casey Schouten who each finished the match with 11 kills. Logan Brennan led the Wesmen in digs with eight. Schouten had a strong serving match finishing with four service aces.

Winnipeg started the contest on a positive note winning the opening sets in easy fashion by scores of 25-17 and 25-16. The Wesmen had a hitting percentage of .387 in the first set as they committed only two hitting errors. The Wesmen hitting machine was even better in the second set committing one error on their way to a hitting mark of .552 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Mount Royal turned things around in the third set finishing the set with a hitting percentage of .680 and taking advantage of five Wesmen errors in the set. The Cougars took the set by a score of 25-14.

The Cougars with momentum on their side raced out to a 10-1 lead in the fourth set. A brief run by the Wesmen closed the gap to 16-10 at the technical break before the Cougars went on to even the match taking the fourth set 25-17.

In the final set, the Cougars held a slim 5-4 lead early on until three straight points soon after extended their lead to 8-4 at the change of sides. Another run by the Cougars soon after put them up 13-6 before eventually winning the set 15-9.
