Wesmen Beat Cougars 87-81 To Complete Weekend Sweep

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the University of Regina Cougars after posting an 87-81 victory Saturday night at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg won the series opener by a score of 102-93 Friday evening. The win by the Wesmen improves their record to 12-6. Winnipeg has already clinched a playoff berth and will know their final placing after next weekend's road games in Victoria. The Cougars see their record fall to 7-11 and still remain in the hunt for a conference playoff spot.

Fifth year guard Jamar Farley led Winnipeg with a game high 22 points, including going 6-for-10 from three point range. Sean Tarver came off the bench to score 20 points. Denzel Lynch-Blair added 16 points while Ryan Oirbans had a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. Will Sesay led the Wesmen on the boards with 11 rebounds.

The Cougars were led by Alex Igual's 18 points, including a trio of three pointers. Johnell Johnson also finished with 18 points and hauled in nine rebounds. Brandon Tull finished with 14 while Brian Ofori had a double-double 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Farley connected for two three pointers early on to give the Wesmen a 6-5 lead nearing the half way point of the first quarter. Both teams found their offensive game in the later stages as Winnipeg led 22-21 after the opening 10 minutes of play.

Both teams struggled in the second half, connecting on just over 30% of their shots from the field. Regina outscored Winnipeg 18-16 to carry a slim 39-38 lead into the halftime break.

The two Canada West combatants were dead even in the third quarter both scoring 23 points to push the Cougars ahead 62-61 heading into the fourth quarter.

Winnipeg took control of the contest at the midway point of the fourth quarter. The Wesmen went on a 10-1 run, paced by a trio of baskets by Sean Tarver to take a 78-74 lead. A three pointer by Alex Iqual put the Wesmen ahead 78-77 with 2:25 left in the fourth. Winnipeg put the game out of reach on a three pointer by Narcisse Ambanza to put the Wesmen up 83-77. Winnipeg drained their free throws in the final 45 seconds to secure the 87-81 victory.

Winnipeg as mentioned will close out their regular season schedule against the Victoria Vikes on the road next Friday and Saturday. Regina will be at home facing the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.


Senior players Ryan Oirbans and Jamar Farley were honoured in a special pre-game ceremony. Both players played their final regular season home game Saturday night.
