Wesmen stay close but fall short to Bisons

Box Score

BY DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics

The Winnipeg Wesmen were able to snap one skid, but not able to end the one that matters the most.

Ashleigh Laube and Emma Parker both posted double-doubles – and season highs for kills – but the Wesmen women's volleyball team wasn't able to get past its crosstown rival Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) loss to the Manitoba Bisons at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Parker had 15 kills and 14 digs, and Laube added 14 kills and 10 digs as the Wesmen (1-17) managed to take a set off an opponent for the first time in seven matches. Winnipeg, however, wasn't able to snap its losing streak, which ran to 15.

Parker's 58 swings were a Canada West high for a four-set match this season.

Kalena Schulz added nine kills and 14 digs, and setter Rylie Dickson mustered a career-high five block assists for Winnipeg.

Left side Kearley Abbott once again led the Bisons (8-10) with 21 kills and 10 digs, and Josie Abbott added 10 and 12.

Manitoba hit .243 for the match to Winnipeg's .146.
