Ambanza's free throws help Wesmen hold on for 3rd straight win

Box Score

The Winnipeg Wesmen pulled into sole possession of third place in the Canada West conference Saturday, finishing off an impressive road sweep of the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Narcisse Ambanza made two free throws with 13 seconds left and the Wesmen men's basketball team survived the Pronghorns' last gasp to tie in an 86-83 Canada West victory in Lethbridge.

The Wesmen have now won three in a row and six of their last seven to pull to 7-3 behind only Calgary and UBC in the conference standings.

Ambanza finished with 14 points and five rebounds and the Wesmen got a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds from Sean Tarver in sending the Pronghorns (4-4) to their fourth straight loss. Joseph Medrano had 15 points, Adam Benrabah added 11 and Will Sesay had 11 off the bench for Winnipeg, which trailed 50-44 at halftime.

The Wesmen held Lethbridge to just 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a key 8-0 run early in the period when Winnipeg wiped out a five-point deficit and turned it into a 78-75 lead.

The Wesmen wouldn't trail the rest of the way.

After Ambanza's free throws, the Pronghorns called timeout and set up to try and tie. Kyle Peterson, Mike Pierzchala and Colton Gibb, at the buzzer, each took threes to try to pull even, but Peterson's shot air-balled, Pierzchala's rimmed out and Gibb's heave had more desperation than potential as the buzzer sounded.

Peterson had 20 to lead the Pronghorns, while Chad Oviatt added 12 and Pierzchala, Gibb and Awak Piom 11 each.

The Wesmen are back home on the back-end of a home-and-home with the Brandon Bobcats with Winnipeg playing host Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.
