The Winnipeg Wesmen women's volleyball team couldn't sustain some early momentum and dropped a four-set decision to the MacEwan Griffins Saturday night. 

Hailey Cornelis and Carly Weber had 14 kills each and the Griffins handed the Wesmen their third straight defeat in a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-7) Canada West conference match in Edmonton. 

The Wesmen (3-9) got eight kills apiece from Emma Parker and Ashleigh Laube, but hit .095 for the night. Taylor Boughton had six kills on 14 swings to lead the Wesmen middles in attacking. She also added four total blocks. 

Madison Fyvie had a match-high 15 digs for the Wesmen, who won't play again until the second semester. 

Winnipeg was unable to do anything to slow down the Griffins late in the match, but head coach Diane Scott said the wave of momentum started going against them as early as Set 2.

"The horse was out of the barn a long time before that," Scott said of the fourth set. "There was a breakdown, they made some adjustments in the second set. They were swinging line and we weren't able to block it at the net or make the dig down the line.

"It's a lesson learned. They're a very good team. They had a lot of attackers, per se, whereas last night they ran more middle. Tonight, they had more success with their outside attackers. We've seen that on video, but it's just a reality.

"We still have lessons to learn and we still have work to do."

MacEwan improved to 7-5 on the season with its second straight win and third in its last four. 

The Griffins hit .225 for the night and out-dug the Wesmen 51-43.
