In a clash of two teams scrapping to stay above the line in the Canada West playoff picture, the Calgary Dinos were too much for the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night.

Daniel Thiessen had 16 kills in just three sets, but the Dinos used two late-set surges to take control and record a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) conference victory in Calgary.

The Dinos found points late in the first and second sets, turning the tide in the second with a critical five-point run.

Up a set, but down 23-20 in the second, the Dinos got points off three Wesmen errors — a Garrett Jones serve error, and Ethan Duncan and Thiessen attack errors — plus kills from Tim Taylor and Hamish Hazelden to score the next five points and take the set.

In Set 1, it was a similar story. Thiessen gave the Wesmen a 21-20 lead on a kill, but Winnipeg (5-8) would not score the rest of the way as another five-point run sealed the set. 

Duncan finished with eight kills and led all Wesmen outside hitters with a .438 percentage. Adrian Dyck added nine kills, and Mikael Clegg had a team-high seven digs.

Taylor led the Dinos (6-7) with nine kills as Calgary hit .310 on the night to Winnipeg's .304.

The win put the Dinos two points up on the Wesmen for seventh place in the conference. The Wesmen are tied with Manitoba for the eighth and final playoff position.
