Wesmen can't find answer to slow blazing Bobcats

Box Score

DAVID LARKINS, Wesmen Athletics

The Brandon Bobcats continued their tear through the Canada West conference, scoring yet another sweep Thursday night in Winnipeg.

The No. 1-ranked BU men's volleyball team hit .337 for the match and beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) to win their 11th straight Canada West match. It was the 10th time in the past 11 matches the Bobcats have eliminated a team in three straight sets.

The Wesmen fell to 5-10 on the season and are going to need a major push in the final seven conference matches to try and get in the top eight to make the post-season.

Daniel Thiessen and Ethan Duncan both had nine kills to lead the Wesmen, who hit .124 for the match.

"I think (the biggest problem with Brandon) is just ball management," middle blocker Garrett Jones said. "It's their ability to limit the errors on their side, which makes it tough. When you make a few errors on your side it feels like it makes it really tough to get back in the game."

Robin Baghdady and Elliot Viles both had 10 kills to lead Brandon (15-2), which hasn't lost since a Nov. 10 setback at Mount Royal.

"It's one of those things where we have some good, veteran leadership and some guys that are pretty motivated to try and do better than we have in the past and they take every day as a challenge," BU head coach Grant Wilson. "We haven't really looked too far ahead. We're just kinda focused on who's right in front of us and, for the most part, that's worked out well for us."

The two teams will meet again Saturday in Brandon.

The Wesmen remain four points back of a potential playoff spot with Manitoba, UBC and Alberta still on their slate.
