MBB | Second-quarter slump downs Wesmen in loss to Cougars

Box Score

REGINA — DJ Dixon had a career-high Saturday night, but the Winnipeg Wesmen weren't able to capitalize in their quest to gain a weekend split.

Dixon, a second-year guard, had 28 points and added eight rebounds, three steals and three assists as the Wesmen men's basketball team dropped its third straight game, 86-78 to the Regina Cougars.

Winnipeg fell to 2-4 and Regina improved to 3-3.

The Wesmen took a 23-16 lead out of the first quarter but, after pushing the lead to 28-18, went the next 4:12 without scoring as the Cougars tore off a 10-0 run. The Wesmen scored just five points over the final 8:40 of the second and went into halftime down 39-33.

Adam Benrabah added 14 points and five rebounds for the Wesmen, who also got 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting from Billy Yaworsky

Carter Millar had 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead the Cougars. Josiah Thomas had 15 points off the bench and Greishe Clerjuste added 10.

The Wesmen are back in Winnipeg this week with a home-and-home series against the Manitoba Bisons with games Thursday at U of M and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.
