MVB | Thiessen's double-double paces Wesmen to 5th straight win

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. — Daniel Thiessen matched a career-high for digs and the Winnipeg Wesmen pulled away for another Canada West conference victory Friday night.

Thiessen had 17 kills and matched his career-high with 17 digs as the Wesmen men's volleyball team downed the UBC-Okanagan Heat 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22) to win for the fifth straight time.

He made just five errors on 39 swings and hit .308 for the match. Thiessen previously set his career-high for digs almost a year ago to the day — in a 3-2 loss against Saskatchewan, Jan. 4, 2019.

Nigel Nielsen added 10 kills, Mikael Clegg had 41 assists and 11 digs and Darian Picklyk added 10 digs. Left side Eric Dornez chipped in with six kills on 11 swings with zero errors.

Thiessen has double-doubles in four of his last five matches and has averaged 18 kills and 11.6 digs during that stretch.

"We played pretty good," Clegg said. "That's a really good team on the other side of the net. It's how volleyball goes, each team will get a few points here and there. It's whichever team can roll with it better. There's a lot of things we want to improve on for tomorrow's game."

UBCO (0-11) got 18 kills from Denham O'Reilly, and 11 kills and 11 digs from Cam Vanderveen.

Winnipeg hit .194 for the match and UBCO was .163.

The Wesmen turned the match in the third set. Down 16-13, Winnipeg tore off three straight points and won eight of the next nine to go ahead 21-17. In the fourth set, they used a five-point run to wipe out a one-point deficit and go ahead 19-14.

The two teams will play each other once again on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. The match can be viewed on Co-Op Canada West TV.
