WSOC | Wesmen struggle in second half against defending champs

The defending national champions certainly played like it Sunday morning.

The MacEwan Griffins scored two goals during time added on in the first half and then added four in a six-minute span in the second half to pull away for a 7-1 Canada West conference women's soccer match at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

The Griffins, who won the U Sports national title last season, certainly looked the part after falling behind 1-0. The Wesmen managed to defend strong for the better part of 45 minutes in the first half, but gave up goals to Nikki Brodeur and Grace Mwasalla in the waning seconds of the first half.

Jazmyn Castro scored her second goal of the season in the 19th minute when she converted from the penalty spot with a decisive strike to the lower left corner past Bianca Castillo.

Mwasalla scored four goals for the Griffins, who have won six straight matches and stand atop the Prairie Division of the Canada West at 8-2.

Sophie Lavallee and Brenna Paquin also scored for the Griffins.

Winnipeg fell to 1-8-1 with a home-and-home series against Manitoba this week starting Thursday at U of M and finishing Saturday (noon) at Ralph Cantafio.
