EDMONTON — Raizel Guinto stole the show for the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night.
Guinto, the fifth-year transfer point guard, had a career-high eight steals and scored 20 points as the Wesmen women's basketball team won for the second straight night, defeating the MacEwan Griffins 74-59.
Guinto's eight swipes are not only her best as a Wesmen, but also top her previous career-high of five set when she was with Louisiana Tech.
Kyanna Giles had 13 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, and Julia Schatkowsky had 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting plus six rebounds.
Robyn Boulanger added 10 points, and Tamiya Ness 10 boards.
The Wesmen opened a 19-14 lead after a quarter and led 37-33 at the half.
They went on to win despite shooting just 4-for-26 from three.
The Wesmen flipped the game at the start of the third quarter. After a pair of MacEwan free throws cut the lead to two 10 seconds in, Winnipeg ripped off a 12-0 run over the next 2:55 to push the lead up to 51-35.
The Griffins trimmed the lead back down to six late in the third quarter, and were down 61-54 with 6:36 to go in the game, but the Wesmen iced it with a 10-0 run over the next 3:58 that gave them their largest lead of the game.
Mackenzie Farmer led four MacEwan scorers in double figures with 19 points. Shannon Majeau had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
