MBB | Wesmen empty bench to put down 'Pack

All 12 Winnipeg Wesmen saw the floor and recorded a stat Friday, as the home side handled the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack with relative ease.

Alberto Gordo had 20 poitns and six rebounds and Shawn Maranan had 15 and six, plus for steals, to lead the Wesmen men's basketball team to an 84-49 drubbing of the TRU Wolfpack at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen held the Wolfpack to just 23 points after half as head coach Mike Raimbault found significant minutes for every player on the roster.

The Wesmen made 11 of 29 from three and shot 43.7 per cent from the field in defeating the Wolfpack for the first time since 2019, the last time TRU made the trip to Winnipeg.

Freshman Elijah Mensah played a career-high 21 minutes and scored a career-high 10 points to go along with five rebounds in his first conference game on home floor.

Daniel Bost, Asher Mayan and Denys Bachurin each had 11 points for the Wolfpack (0-1), who also got nine rebounds from Mayan.

TRU managed just 28 rebounds total on the night, while Winnipeg had 18 offensive boards as part of its 43 total.

The Wesmen flipped the game late in the second quarter with an 11-0 run that responded to a TRU 7-0 run that cut the lead to 30-24. From there, however, the Wesmen held the Wolfpack without a field goal for the next 3:36 as Winnipeg took a 41-26 lead into halftime.

The teams will tip off Saturday (5 p.m.) with tickets available online now.
