MBB | Dominant fourth quarter lifts Wesmen to sweep of Bobcats

BRANDON — The Winnipeg Wesmen picked the right time to find their stroke from the three-point line.

Emmanuel Thomas, Shawn Maranan and Donald Stewart each hit three-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Wesmen men's basketball team outscored the Brandon Bobcats 29-7 in the fourth quarter to pull away for an 88-65 Canada West conference win Saturday night.

Elisha Ampofo's jumper with 7:04 to go pulled the Bobcats to within three, but the home team was held to three points the rest of the way as Winnipeg clamped down on a team that entered the weekend as the nation's top-scoring team.

It was the first time this season the Bobcats had been held to under 70 points while the Wesmen limited the nation's top three-point shooting team to 5-for-23, its worst night from three in 10 conference games.

Winnipeg wasn't exactly on fire from the perimeter, either, over the first three quarters, making only two of their first 16 attempts. But Thomas made one with 5:27 to go to give the Wesmen some breathing room, part of a personal 7-2 run that gave the Wesmen a 72-64 edge.

Maranan was next, hitting a three from the volleyball attack line more than 30 feet out while getting fouled. He converted the four-point play to push the lead to 77-64, and Stewart followed 1:29 later to bump the lead to 17.

The Wesmen improved to 6-2 and moved into third place in the standings, passing the Bobcats who fell to 7-3 with their first losing streak of the season.

Thomas finished with a career-high 20 points along with seven rebounds to pace the Wesmen. Stewart had his second straight 20-point game, Malachi Alexander had 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting, and Maranan finished with 10.

Brandon got 22 from Jahmaal Gardner and 16 points and 15 rebounds from Anthony Tsegakele. Ampofo scored 11 off the bench.
