MBB | Slow start dooms Wesmen in failed quest for Saskatoon sweep

Box Score

SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen will toss that game away and turn their attention to the post-season.

The Wesmen men's basketball team trailed by as many as 25 points and ultimately dropped an 80-64 Canada West conference decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night.

The loss in the season finale dropped the Wesmen record to 8-8 and temporarily in third place in the East Division. The Wesmen will await a rescheduled game in Brandon between the Bobcats and Manitoba Bisons to learn their final seeding for the 17-team conference tournament that starts in two weeks in Calgary.

The Wesmen, who could finish fourth in the East Division based on a tiebreak with Manitoba, should the Bisons win, may fall into the bottom eight of the conference and have to play a game on the first day of the tournament that starts March 4. Should Brandon beat Manitoba on Sunday, the Wesmen would finish in the top nine and earn a first-day bye.

Malachi Alexander led the Wesmen with 10 points off the bench.

Despite being held to their second-lowest output of the season, the Wesmen managed to go a respectable 11-for-31 from three.

Alexander Dewar's 18 points led the Huskies, who also got 15 from Marquavian Stephens, 12 points from Kessler Bishop and 10 and 11 rebounds from Emmanuel Akintunde.

The Huskies (11-5) will be the 6-seed when the conference tournament opens.
