MVB | Thiessen breaks Wesmen career kills record

SASKATOON — On a night where he made program history, Daniel Thiessen would likely have preferred a better result for the program of which he is now an all-time leader.

The fifth-year right side had 15 kills and in the process set the Winnipeg Wesmen Canada West-era mark for most kills in a career, but the Wesmen men's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-10) conference defeat Friday night.

Thiessen's fourth-set kill — his 15th of the night — was the 1,090th of his career and surpassed Ben Schellenberg for the most kills in a career since the Wesmen joined the Canada West in 2000.

But that was about all that went right for the Wesmen on Friday as they fell to 10-7 with the season finale looming on Saturday.

The Wesmen already know they will host a post-season pool next weekend as the East Division's top seed, while Saskatchewan (9-8) gave itself a better shot at the 2-seed out of the East and a more favourable playoff slot.

The loss snapped Winnipeg's season-long three-match win streak.

Eric Dornez added nine kills for the Wesmen and Nigel Nielsen seven. Darian Picklyk had a match-high 13 digs.

The Wesmen hit a season-low .090, including -.100 in the first set when they committed eight attack errors and had just six kills, and -.050 in the fourth when six kills were mitigated by seven errors.

Conversely, the Huskies hit .737 in the fourth set with 14 kills on 19 swings and no errors. Saskatchewan finished the match with a .311 efficiency.

Levi Olson led the way for Saskatchewan with 19 kills.
