REGINA — One night after a frustrating finish, the Winnipeg Wesmen went nearly wire-to-wire for their first win.
Fresh off a double-double the night before,
Mikhail Mikhailov had a career-high 23 points and
Donald Stewart had his first career double-double as the Wesmen men's basketball team posted an 86-71 non-conference win over the Mount Royal Cougars Friday night at the University of Regina tournament.
Mikhailov, who had a double-double in a loss to host Regina on Thursday, also added seven rebounds and shot 10-for-13 from the field. Stewart, who had a career-high 20 points on Thursday, added 18 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, while shooting 4-for-4 from three.
The Wesmen led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter, and went into half with a 43-38 lead.
"The weekend was positive for us in terms of getting back into some competition," Wesmen head coach
Mike Raimbault said. "We had a chance to see some guys play, some different line-ups, and find out more about what needs to be improved upon moving forward."
Winnipeg shot 10-for-23 from three — its second straight game shooting at least 40 per cent from the perimeter — and was 47.8 per cent from the field. The Wesmen outrebounded MRU 40-39.
Freshman
David Lado came off the bench with 11 points for the Wesmen.
MRU was led by Keivonte Watt's 16 points and Holt Tomie's 12 points, 10 boards and eight assists.
The Cougars were held to 5-for-19 shooting from three and made 33 of 79 from the field.
In two games in Regina, the Wesmen held opponents to below 29.4 per cent shooting from three.
