REGINA — The Winnipeg Wesmen are heading into the bye week just two points out of second place in the Canada West conference.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team matched a season-high for digs in a three-set match with 55 and held off a resilient Regina Cougars team Saturday to post a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-13) Canada West conference win, the team's fourth straight victory.
The Wesmen (13-5) have won nine of their last 10 and boast their best record through 18 matches since the team started 12-6 in 2011-12. Winnipeg's best mark through 18 games in the Canada West era was the 15-3 the Wesmen posted in 2004-05.
Emma Parker led three Wesmen in double figures in digs with 13.
Ashleigh Laube added 12 and
Taylor Cangemi 10 as Winnipeg held Regina to .130 attacking with 20 errors.
Kely Warmington served up a career-high four aces and also added four kills, four digs and two block assists.
Selva Planincic led the Wesmen with a team-high 11 kills on .370 attacking.
The Wesmen hit .198 for the match.
The Cougars gave the Wesmen enough to handle in the first set and were poised to take the opening frame before the Wesmen won 11 out of 12 points to turn a 19-14 deficit into a 25-20 victory. Similarly, in the second set, the Wesmen fell behind 12-8 before scoring six of the next seven. Then, at 21-21, they got a kill from Planincic, two Regina errors and a Warmington ace to close out the set.
Bailey Balaberda led Regina (2-14) with 11 kills.
The team heads into the bye before a home-and-home series with the Manitoba Bisons Feb. 2 and 4.
