The Winnipeg Wesmen are heading into their biggest Duckworth Challenge week on their longest win streak in seven years.
Five Wesmen scored in double figures and Winnipeg won its sixth straight game Saturday, defeating the Fraser Valley Cascades 71-65 in a Canada West conference clash at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen have won 11 of their last 12 games and have matched the six-game win streak they had in January 2016, a string that was ended by the Manitoba Bisons, the team the Wesmen will face next in the annual crosstown rivalry series.Â
Shawn Maranan's 14 points led the Wesmen (13-3), who went on a key 10-4 run in the fourth quarter after the Cascades had pulled to 57-55 with 5:57 to go. The Wesmen were 4-for-4 from the field — and 2-for-2 from three — in that pivotal stretch.Â
Mikhail Mikhailov had 13 points and six rebounds,
Donald Stewart added 12 points and seven,
Emmanuel Thomas had 11 and five, and
Malachi Alexander chipped in with 10 points.Â
Dario Lopez led all scorers with 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Cascades (7-9), and Courtney Anderson added 15 points. Chris Jackson dropped 11 with eight rebounds before fouling out.Â
