It was far from artistic, but the Winnipeg Wesmen will take it.
The Wesmen held the Fraser Valley Cascades to their worst shooting performance in five years, and got just hot enough in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 63-50 Canada West conference victory at the Duckworth Centre.
The win solidified a weekend sweep over the No. 7-ranked team in the national coaches poll and pushed the Wesmen past UFV (11-5) into fourth place in the conference.
Fraser Valley made just 15 field goals all night — on 56 attempts — shooting 26.8 per cent from the floor, its lowest percentage since a 25.6 per cent effort in a loss at Saskatchewan, Nov. 3, 2018.
The Wesmen held 2022 first-team conference all-star Deanna Tuchsherer to 1-for-12 shooting and forced the Cascades into 2-for-16 from three. All in all, it was a weekend to forget for the Cascades.
Meanwhile, the Wesmen were far from perfect, but they managed to do enough, specifically late in the game. They led 30-26 at the half and had a modest 44-38 lead after three quarters.
To start the fourth, however, the Wesmen held UFV to only two points — a Natalie Rather layup — over the first 5:13 as they put together an 11-2 run that put them up 15.
Kyanna Giles had 14 of her team-high 16 points after halftime and added five rebounds and five assists. Freshman
Raia Guinto was flawless off the bench, scoring a career-high 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting and 4-for-4 from three.
Julia Schatkowsky had her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. It was her ninth game of the season with double-digit rebounds.
Anna Kernaghan chipped in 10 points.
Maddy Gobeil led the Cascades with 17 points, making more than half of UFV's field goals on the night on 7 of 11 shooting. Julia Tuchsherer scored 10 points on 3-for-10 shooting and Lauren Clements had 10 off the bench.
The Wesmen move on to the annual rivalry series with the Manitoba Bisons, playing at U of M on Friday and hosting the Bisons on Saturday at 5 p.m.
