WSOC | Early goal deflates Wesmen in home loss

Coming off a quality showing that was decided in the late stages a day prior, the Winnipeg Wesmen were felled by a goal in the early moments Sunday.

Jessica Tsai scored in the fifth minute and the Wesmen women's soccer team eventually dropped a 3-0 Canada West conference decision to the Manitoba Bisons at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

The Wesmen opened on the front foot and appeared to carry some energy over from a well-contested 1-0 defeat to the Bisons Saturday. But Tsai's corner kick eluded the grasp of Wesmen keeper Madison Priebe and an unfortunate bounce put the home side behind quickly.

The Bisons went further ahead in the 23rd minute when Evelyn Lekivetz scored her first of the season, and rounded out the scoring on Paris Siddhu's goal in the 74th.

Priebe made four more saves and now holds the Wesmen program record for saves in a season with 122. She is six shy of tying the Canada West record for saves in a season, held by UNBC's Jordan Hall in 2013.

Karina Bagi made three saves for the Bisons (4-8-0).

The Wesmen fell to 0-8-4 on the season heading into the final weekend of Canada West play. They will host Saskatchewan (Saturday, noon) and Regina (Sunday, noon) to close out the 2023 campaign.
