WBB | Shooting woes prove problematic in loss to Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The Wesmen left Winnipeg only to hit a cold snap in Alberta.

The Wesmen women's basketball team saw a three-point first-quarter deficit balloon by halftime and dropped its fourth straight Canada West decision, losing 96-62 on the road to the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Winnipeg (1-5) trailed 23-20 after a quarter, but was held to 2-for-14 shooting in the second quarter as the Pronghorns (3-3) pulled away to take a 43-31 lead at half.

The Wesmen shot 29.4 per cent from the field for the night and made four of 28 from three, the third straight game they've shot 20 per cent or less on three-pointers.

Anna Kernaghan had a season-high 16 points along with six rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead the Wesmen, who are back in Alberta again next weekend as they go to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars.

Freshman Tana Layton scored 12 points in her second straight start, and Raia Guinto scored 10 off the bench. Freshman Jasia Hayden had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Pronghorns, who shot 48.4 per cent from the field and went 13-for-28 from three, got 18 points apiece from Piper Dobbelsteyn and Vlada Hozalova, which led five players in double digits. Tobore Okome had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Kamryn Deklerk scored 12 and Jenessa Doctor added 10.
