The Winnipeg Wesmen picked a bad time to have one of their worst shooting nights of the past 10 years.
Â
The No. 3-ranked Wesmen men's basketball team shot under 10 per cent from three and struggled to get anything going offensively Friday night, dropping a 56-49 Canada West conference decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Â
Winnipeg's five-game win streak was snapped and it was due in large part to a frigid effort from the perimeter. The Wesmen made just 3 of 31 from three, the program's worst three-point shooting night since the Wesmen went 1-for-18 in an 80-63 win over Brandon on Jan. 24, 2015.
Â
The Huskies (5-4), meanwhile, weren't much better, but they were when it counted. Fisayo Moibi made back-to-back threes in the first three minutes of the second half that pushed a modest four-point Saskatchewan lead up to 33-23, a gap that — considering the offensive plights of both teams — was not insignificant.
Â
The Huskies got the lead up to 12 later in the quarter, but the Wesmen were able to chip it down to 37-33 with under two to go in the period. Chan de Ciman, however, dropped Saskatchewan's third triple of the quarter to push it back up to seven points.
Â
After cutting lead back down to three in the early stages of the fourth quarter, Winnipeg again stalled out, going without a field goal for the next 2:04.
Â
The loss marked the lowest scoring output for a Wesmen men's team since a 99-48 loss at Saskatchewan, Nov. 19, 2010.
Â
Mikhail Mikhailov's 16 points and 13 rebounds led the Wesmen (7-2), while
Alberto Gordo had 15 points.Â
Â
Winnipeg was only able to muster eight points from its bench and was outscored 29-8 in that category.
Â
Emmanuel Bonsu had 10 points off the bench to lead the Huskies. De Ciman and Easton Thimm both chipped in with eight.Â
