SASKATOON — The Winnipeg Wesmen fought off a road reversal Friday and secured their third straight win.
The Wesmen women's volleyball team set a Canada West-era record for aces in a match and survived a Saskatchewan Huskies comeback to earn a 3-2 (28-26, 25-13, 18-25, 22-25, 15-7) conference win at the Physical Activity Complex.
The Wesmen withstood the Huskies' crack at a reverse sweep after eking out a first-set win and dominating Set 2.
The Wesmen hit .609 in the second set, recording 14 kills on 23 swings with no errors. They hit .140 for the night while Saskatchewan (4-5) attacked at .146.
The Huskies, however, were held to -.048 in the decisive fifth set when they had more errors (6) than kills (5). The Wesmen capped the set with a
Portia Switzer solo block that energized the team and
Christine Kolbuck finished the match with an ace, one of 21 from Winnipeg on the night.
Switzer registered a career-high five aces and seven different Wesmen players recorded at least one ace.
Selva Planincic led the way with 15 kills and hit .344 with four errors on 32 swings. She also added 13 digs.
Brooke Duncalfe had 11 kills and 11 digs.
Taylor Cangemi led the Wesmen in the back row with a team- and season-high 18 digs.
Keely Anderson, a transfer from Brandon, led the Huskies with 15 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Julia Howell Bourner added 11 kills.
