QUEBEC CITY — The Wesmen men's basketball team helped make it Winnipeg 2, Laval 0 Friday night.
Shawn Maranan had a season-high 25 points and was sparkling from the field as the Wesmen dropped the hosts 85-68 at the Laval Rouge et Or Tournament to improve to 1-1 in their three-game slate.
The basketball team's win coincided with the Wesmen men's volleyball team beating Laval in Winnipeg at the Wesmen Classic in a rare non-conference double dip.
Maranan shot 8-for-11 from the field and made all four of his three-pointers in his best shooting performance of the season. He also added four assists and three steals.
The No. 6-ranked Wesmen got a career-high 11 rebounds and 16 points from guard
Alberto Gordo, while
Donald Stewart added 11 points and seven rebounds, and
Mikhail Mikhailov added 10 rebounds and nine points.
The Wesmen rebounded from a tournament-opening loss to the No. 1-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees and will now face the No. 8-ranked St. FX X-Men Saturday (9 a.m. CT) before heading home to prepare for the second half of the Canada West conference season.
